Pepito at Capistrano (3rd edition,) 1948

by Joan and Josephine Constantine and illustrated by Lucia Patton, published by Albert Whitman & Company

Good condition. Interior pages pristine; book jacket has some wrinkles and tears (see images.)

A little [Native American] boy named Pepito lives in southern California. He is eager to take the trip that his grandfather has planned for him, which is to visit the lovely old Mission of San Juan Capistrano. This trip is made to celebrate the boy's birthday on March 19th which is St. Joseph's Day. It is not only a church holiday but the day when an apparently unending cloud of swallows swings in from the sea, darkening the skies in its flight. The migration is an almost inexplicable occurrence; and Pepito unconsciously reflects the feeling of wonder, puzzlement, and awe that all readers must feel over this phenomenon of Nature.
